Oh deer!

This morning was a running day for me, which means I leave the house around 5am to run on the base where I work. I’m driving down Chancellor’s Run Road, a road where everyone – including me – drives faster than they should, and in my peripheral vision I see a deer running towards my car, practically parallel to me. The next three things happened simultaneously: 1) I said, “Oh fuck!” 2) I slammed on the brakes. 3) The deer smacked into my driver’s side door. Pulling over I turned on my flashers and sat for a moment, my heart pounding in my chest. Admittedly, the first thing that flashed through my head was, “What if the deer is dead in the road? What the hell am I supposed to do?” The second thing that flashed through my head was, “Damn it!!” Just yesterday I had a discussion with my coworker about my car – it’s a ‘99 Toyota with nearly 140k miles on it. I love it because it runs great and it’s paid off. So after I hit the deer I thought, oh hell, now I’m going to have to buy a new car. And since I finished grad school a couple of months ago all my school loans are coming due. Ideally I was hoping to postpone buying a new car until I can pay off some of my school loans. Stepping out of my car I was happy to see there was no dead deer in the road and even happier to realize my car had virtually no damage. There is a small dent in the door, but that’s it! Getting back into my car I saw the deer run across the road, its hind leg tucked up underneath it. For my dear friend Sara’s sake (who is the biggest animal lover I know), we’ll pretend faithfully believe the little deer lived a long and fruitful life. That she didn’t limp and wasn’t made fun of and called Gimpy or Tripod by all her little deer friends. That she lived happily ever after. The End.
